Targeted Fuel Subsidies Shield Pakistan From Hormuz Energy Crisis, Says Malik

Ali-Pervaiz

Lahore: Federal Minister for Petroleum Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that Pakistan has successfully navigated severe energy challenges stemming from a six-month disruption around the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking to reporters at the 29th convocation of the University of Management and Technology in Lahore, the minister highlighted that the government successfully protected domestic economic stability against soaring international oil and gas prices. Rather than employing unsustainable broad-based relief, Pakistan is providing subsidized petrol at pre-crisis rates to over 12 million deserving individuals through a targeted relief program. This strategic shift has capped the government’s financial burden at approximately Rs25 billion per month, averting the heavy foreign exchange losses experienced by neighboring countries.
