Nepra decides to ‘expose’ certain Discos

ISLAMABAD: The National Electric Power Regulatory (Nepra) has decided to expose all those power Distribution Companies (Discos) which are unleashing load shedding despite receiving due allocated quota of electricity.

On Friday, the regulator took serious notice of various media reports regarding unscheduled load shedding of up to 12 hours by all the Discos, due to which the public is suffering heavily in this current wave of heat, especially in the areas under lockdown due to COVID-19.

According to Nepra, Discos under the relevant provisions of their licences are obligated to provide uninterrupted and reliable power supply to the consumers. Therefore, all Discos have been strictly directed to take immediate remedial measures to minimize the load shedding and also submit a report in this regard to the Authority immediately.

The data provided by Faisalabad Electric Supply Company (Fesco) shows the power being drawn is almost equal to the demand and the allocated quota by National Power Control Centre.

Therefore, Nepra sees absolutely no justification of excessive load shedding in this regard. In addition, as a distribution licencee, CEOs of Discos are in breach of their duties and responsibilities set out under the Nepra Act.
