PM Encourages Chinese Firms to Embrace Local Coal and Prioritizes Workers’ Safety

Islamabad: During a meeting with a delegation from the Shanghai Electric Group, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring the safety of Chinese workers in Pakistan. Led by Chairman Wu Lei, the delegation discussed ongoing projects and potential investments in the country.

PM Shehbaz assured the delegation of full support to facilitate Chinese investors, particularly in transitioning power plants to use local coal resources. He emphasized the importance of increasing investment in coal mining and urged Chinese firms to shift their focus from imported to local coal for power generation.

The meeting highlighted the Shanghai Electric Group’s involvement in key projects such as the development of Thar Coal mines and a 1320MW coal power project. These initiatives, part of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), are expected to bring significant economic benefits, including estimated annual savings of $400 million.

In attendance were Chairman Meng Donghai of Thar Coal Block 1 Power Generation Company, Economic Affairs Minister Ahad Khan Cheema, Energy Minister Sardar Awais Khan Leghari, Petroleum Minister Dr Musaddik Malik, Deputy Chairman of Planning Commission Muhammad Jahanzeb, and other senior officials.
