KARACHI: The Directorate of College Education Karachi Region has imposed a complete ban on tree cutting in government colleges across the city and issued strict directives to prevent unauthorized disposal of government property and encroachments on college land.
According to an official notification issued by Regional Director Colleges Karachi Gulab Rai, principals of all government colleges in the Karachi region have been instructed to ensure that no trees planted on college premises are cut under any circumstances.
The directive also emphasised the proper maintenance and protection of green spaces within educational institutions.
The notification stated that the decision was taken in accordance with the policy of the Sindh government’s College Education Department aimed at environmental conservation and preservation of urban greenery.
In addition to the ban on tree cutting, the Directorate directed college administrations not to dispose of any scrap material or government-owned property without obtaining prior approval from the competent authority.
The notification further instructed principals to immediately report any incidents or attempts of land grabbing and encroachments on college premises to the concerned deputy commissioner and the director of the Anti-Encroachment Cell, while also keeping the Directorate informed.
The move comes amid growing concerns over environmental degradation and the rapid loss of green cover in Karachi, where climate experts and environmental activists have repeatedly called for stronger measures to protect urban trees and public green spaces.
