# NA Panel Raises Alarm Over Persistent Trade Deficit with China
**ISLAMABAD:** The National Assembly Standing Committee on Commerce has expressed serious concern over Pakistan’s persistent trade deficit with **China and other Free Trade Agreement (FTA) partners**, calling for a comprehensive assessment of the factors contributing to the widening imbalance.
The committee, chaired by MNA **Jawed Hanif**, reviewed a range of issues during its meeting, including tariff reforms, export promotion measures, the performance of key trade-related institutions, trade relations with major international partners and proposed legislative amendments.
The committee directed the Ministry of Commerce to conduct a detailed assessment of Pakistan’s trade deficit with China, Malaysia and Indonesia and present recommendations aimed at improving the country’s trade balance.
The parliamentary panel also sought relevant information regarding the **Saindak project and mineral exports** to determine whether Pakistan is receiving an appropriate economic return from its mineral resources.
During the meeting, the committee was briefed on the proposed **GSP+ scheme**, which is expected to commence from **January 1, 2027**, including its transition period and compliance requirements.
Jawed Hanif directed the Ministry of Commerce to provide a detailed briefing on Pakistan’s preparedness for the new GSP+ framework, highlighting potential opportunities and challenges as well as measures required to maximise the benefits of the scheme.
The committee also sought detailed presentations and comprehensive reports on the **Export Development Fund (EDF), GSP+, Pakistan’s trade deficit with China, Malaysia and Indonesia, and the country’s mineral exports**.
The committee emphasised the need for stronger policy measures to boost exports, improve market access and ensure that Pakistan derives greater economic benefits from its trade agreements and natural resources.
