ISLAMABAD: March 28, 2026 The National Grid Company of Pakistan Limited (NGC) has updated the Ministry of Energy on significant progress in its organization-wide transformation, positioning the company to better serve the country’s evolving power sector needs. Following a briefing to Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari, NGC confirmed that the initiative—launched in January 2026—remains on schedule, with a new operating model set to go live on July 1, 2026.

Government Support for Reform

During the briefing, Federal Minister for Power Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari reiterated the government’s full backing for the transformation.

“NGC’s reform effort reflects the kind of institutional change Pakistan’s power sector urgently needs,” said Minister Leghari. “I commend the leadership and team for their focus on efficiency, transparency, and accountability. The government remains firmly committed to strengthening our national energy infrastructure through initiatives like this.”
Leadership Driving Change

The transformation is led by Managing Director Engr. Altaf Hussain Malik, who took on the role in November 2025 and brings extensive experience in international utility management.

“This is about building a utility that is ready for the future—agile, accountable, and aligned with global best practices,” said Engr. Altaf Hussain Malik. “With strong momentum since January and continued support from the Ministry of Energy, we are on track to deliver a stronger, more capable organization—one that will deliver a more efficient and reliable transmission system for Pakistan.”
Addressing Long-Standing Structural Challenges

The transformation tackles organizational inefficiencies that have persisted since NTDC, NGC’s predecessor company, was established in 1998. Although the company has since evolved into a dedicated Transmission Service Provider, its structure remained tied to the legacy NTDC model—leading to fragmented accountability, overlapping functions, and coordination gaps.

Six Pillars of Restructuring

NGC’s transformation is built on six strategic pillars:

  • Unified Operations Leadership – to speed up project delivery
  • Strengthened Financial Management – for greater transparency
  • Dedicated Regulatory and Stakeholder Teams – to improve coordination
  • Independent Safety Oversight – to make safety a top priority
  • Streamlined Internal Processes – to reduce delays and bureaucracy
  • Modern Digital Systems – to enable real-time data and smarter grid management
    Progress and Timeline

Since the initiative began in January 2026, key leadership roles have been filled, performance metrics established, and new technology systems are nearing completion. Last month, NGC held an all-company town hall to communicate the changes internally, reflecting a commitment to transparency and organizational alignment.

The transition to the new operating model is scheduled for July 1, 2026, with full digital and operational maturity expected by December 31, 2026.
