ISLAMABAD: The federal government has launched a Special Relief Scheme on the directives of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif to provide targeted relief to users of motorcycles, rickshaws, Chingchis and vehicles up to 800cc amid a sharp increase in fuel prices.
Under the scheme, eligible users will receive Rs100 per litre relief on petrol.
According to an official statement issued on Sunday, users of two- and three-wheelers, including motorcycles, rickshaws and Chingchis, will be eligible for relief on up to 20 litres of petrol per month, providing maximum monthly relief of Rs2,000.
Similarly, owners of small cars with engine capacity of up to 800cc will receive Rs100 per litre relief on up to 30 litres of petrol per month, equivalent to maximum monthly relief of Rs3,000.
Registration Begins
Registration for the Special Relief Scheme has commenced from Sunday. The government said details of the registration procedure would be communicated to the public through an awareness campaign.
The scheme will be implemented in phases across the country.
In Islamabad, implementation will begin on the night between Monday and Tuesday, while the scheme will be rolled out across the rest of Pakistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB) on the night between Wednesday and Thursday.
The government has introduced the relief programme in response to the sharp rise in petroleum prices in recent weeks, which has increased transportation costs and added to inflationary pressures.
The initiative is aimed particularly at users of small vehicles and public transport who are more directly affected by higher petrol prices.
The government said the scheme forms part of its efforts to provide immediate relief to vulnerable segments of the population following the unprecedented increase in fuel prices amid the ongoing regional conflict and disruption in international energy markets.
