KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah has emphasized the importance of protecting oceans and marine ecosystems, describing them as a vital source of life, economic prosperity, and environmental balance.
In his message on the occasion of World Oceans Day, the Chief Minister said that Sindh’s coastline and marine resources are a valuable natural heritage that must be preserved for future generations. He stressed that protecting the oceans is a shared responsibility and called upon citizens to play their role in safeguarding coastal and marine environments from pollution.
Highlighting the significance of oceans, Murad Ali Shah noted that they produce more than 50 percent of the oxygen on Earth and serve as a major source of food and livelihoods for millions of people worldwide.
Referring to this year’s World Oceans Day theme, “Reimagine,” he said it encourages people to rethink their relationship with the oceans and adopt sustainable practices to ensure their long-term health and survival.
The Chief Minister warned that marine ecosystems are facing serious threats from environmental pollution, plastic waste, and climate change, which are endangering marine biodiversity and coastal communities.
He said the Sindh government is taking practical measures to protect coastal areas, conserve mangrove forests, and preserve marine biodiversity. Describing mangroves as a natural shield against climate change, he added that their protection remains a key priority of the provincial government.
Murad Ali Shah stated that oceans are not merely bodies of water but are essential to human civilization, economic development, and environmental sustainability. He stressed that ensuring clean, safe, and healthy oceans for future generations is both a national and moral responsibility.
He urged the public to become guardians of the oceans rather than merely beneficiaries of their resources and appealed to citizens to help keep beaches and marine environments free from pollution.
“Healthy oceans are the foundation of a secure future,” the Chief Minister said, reaffirming the Sindh government’s commitment to protecting oceans and all water resources.
