PM Reviews 100MW Solarisation Project for Gilgit-Baltistan, Orders Expedited Completion

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Tuesday directed authorities to accelerate work on the federal government’s 100-megawatt solar energy project in Gilgit-Baltistan (GB), reaffirming Islamabad’s commitment to providing affordable and sustainable energy to the region.

Chairing a review meeting on the progress of the project, the prime minister was informed that the solarisation of government buildings and households across Gilgit-Baltistan is progressing steadily. Officials briefed him that the Baltistan Division component of the project is expected to be completed by October 2026, while the overall 100MW solarisation initiative is scheduled for completion by December 2026.

Prime Minister Shehbaz emphasized that the federal government will fully finance the project, which aims to reduce energy costs, improve access to clean electricity, and support sustainable development in the mountainous region.

“The federal government is committed to ensuring affordable and reliable energy for the people of Gilgit-Baltistan through the timely completion of this important renewable energy project,” the prime minister said.

He directed all relevant departments to expedite implementation and ensure strict transparency throughout the execution process. The prime minister also instructed authorities to arrange independent third-party validation at every stage of the project to maintain quality standards and accountability.

The 100MW solar initiative is expected to significantly reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, lower electricity costs, and contribute to environmental sustainability in Gilgit-Baltistan.

Separately, Sindh Governor Nihaal Hashmi called on the prime minister and discussed matters relating to the province as well as the overall political situation in the country, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office.

The prime minister also held separate meetings with Members of the National Assembly, including Mian Alam Daad Laleka, Erum Hamid Hameed, Sheikh Aftab Ahmed, Muhammad Khan Daha, Anwaar-ul-Haq Chaudhry, Shahbaz Babar, Sardar Shamsher Mazari, and Daniyal Ahmad.

The lawmakers appreciated the government’s people-friendly budget for fiscal year 2026-27 and praised Pakistan’s diplomatic efforts aimed at promoting regional peace, stability, and improved security.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif extended his greetings to the nation and the Muslim Ummah on the commencement of the Islamic New Year 1448 Hijri. In his message on 1st Muharram, he expressed hope that the new year would bring peace, prosperity, and stability across the world.

Highlighting the significance of Muharram-ul-Haram, the prime minister paid tribute to the sacrifices of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) and his companions in the Battle of Karbala and reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to supporting oppressed communities, particularly in Palestine and Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir.
