Petrol Price Rises by Rs3.81, HSD by Rs3.59 per Litre
ISLAMABAD: The federal government has increased the prices of petrol and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs3.81 and Rs3.59 per litre, respectively, following fluctuations in international oil prices.
Under the latest revision, petrol will now cost Rs341.59 per litre, while the price of high-speed diesel has been raised to Rs368.29 per litre.
According to a notification issued by the Petroleum Division, the revised prices will remain effective from August 22 to August 24.
The government continues to charge Rs114 per litre in taxes and duties on petrol and Rs100 per litre on diesel.
Despite the latest increase, HSD remains significantly below its record high of Rs520.35 per litre, reached on April 3. Diesel prices had climbed from around Rs281 per litre following the escalation of the US-Iran conflict on February 28.
Petrol had also touched a record Rs458.41 per litre on April 3, after rising from around Rs266 per litre in early March.
The latest adjustment comes amid continued volatility in international oil markets following renewed tensions in the Middle East. Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik had earlier announced that fuel prices would be reviewed on a daily basis, with the Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) responsible for determining prices in line with international market trends.
Previously, the government had been revising fuel prices on a weekly basis since early March, while also introducing fuel conservation measures and targeted relief initiatives amid concerns over potential disruptions to global oil supplies.
Petrol and diesel prices have a significant impact on the economy and consumers. Petrol is widely used by private vehicles, motorcycles, rickshaws and other small transport, making price increases particularly significant for middle- and lower-middle-income households.
HSD, meanwhile, is extensively used by heavy transport, power plants and large generators, meaning changes in diesel prices have a broader impact on transportation, electricity generation and overall business costs.
Petrol and HSD remain the government’s major petroleum revenue sources, with combined monthly sales of around 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes, compared with approximately 10,000 tonnes of monthly kerosene demand.
