ECNEC Approves Key Infrastructure Projects Including Thar Coal Rail Connectivity

Islamabad: The Executive Committee of the National Economic Council (ECNEC) on Friday approved a range of major development initiatives, including the detailed design of the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway project, Thar Coal Rail Connectivity, Havelian Dry Port, and arrangements linked to the Diamer-Bhasha Dam.

The meeting was chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, who reiterated the government’s commitment to strengthening national infrastructure, improving public services, and addressing development needs across all provinces.

Among the key approvals were the ML-1 detailed design project, Havelian Dry Port, Lowari Tunnel access improvements, Thar Coal Rail Connectivity, Kachhi Canal project, irrigation upgrades in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, construction and expansion works at Jinnah Hospital Islamabad, the Sindh Human Capital 1000 Days Programme, Sindh flood rehabilitation support, and arrangements related to the Diamer-Bhasha Dam.

Officials said the Thar Coal Rail Connectivity project is expected to play a critical role in improving transportation of coal from Thar’s reserves, enhancing logistics efficiency and supporting the country’s long-term energy and industrial needs.

The committee also reviewed broader development priorities aimed at regional balance, infrastructure expansion, and strengthening economic resilience through improved connectivity and social sector investment.

The meeting was attended by Minister for Finance and Revenue Muhammad Aurangzeb, Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal, along with provincial ministers, SAPM Tariq Bajwa, and senior officials from relevant federal ministries.
